Vermont Integrative Veterinary Associates has provided medical and surgical care for pets and livestock in Northern Vermont and New York since its inception. Certification in veterinary acupuncture, as well as in Chinese Herbal Medicine complements many cases in both pets and livestock. Both the traditional medicine of our Western hemisphere and the valuable contribution of Eastern medicine are considered in all cases by Drs. Thompson and Bond and integrated as needed. Cattle, horses, dogs and cats comprise most of the patient load of the practice but caseloads also include llamas, alpacas, guineas pigs and other “pocket pets”, pigs, sheep and goats.

Laser Surgery
Our clinic is one of few in Vermont to offer laser surgical techniques for soft tissue surgery, including all spays, neuters and declaws (onychectomies). The carbon dioxide laser replaces the scalpel in most cases, creating less post-operative pain and swelling, as small blood vessels and nerves endings are sealed as the laser cuts. Other common surgical procedures for which the laser is utilized are tumor resection and extreme toenail overgrowth. |

Acupuncture
Since 2003, Dr. Thompson has complemented traditional Western therapy with acupuncture, including dry needling, electro-acupuncture, moxibustion and aquapuncture. While certified by the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society since 2003, he has continued to elevate the art and science through advanced certification and Fellowship in The American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture and lecturing for the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine in Florida and China. Dr. Bond received her certification for Veterinary Acupuncture from the Chi Institure in 2011. Click here for more information on veterinary acupuncture.

Herbal Pharmacy
Chinese herbal medicine further complements the use of acupuncture and Western medical services at VIVA. Dr. Thompson has completed certification in Chinese Veterinary Herbology with both IVAS and the Chi Institute. All effort to assure the safety and efficacy of our Chinese herbal medications are taken--only reputable suppliers with the highest standards of quality control are utilized. VIVA has treated such diseases as fractures, cancer, gastric ulcers, diabetes and arthritis. While not all cases can be treated solely with Chinese herbals, many can. When needed, pharmaceuticals are, of course, required and used. |

Physical Therapy
Our most exciting new feature is our underwater treadmill. We also have many physical therapy tools such as a cold laser, balance boards, cavaletti poles, etc. There are many pets that can benefit from rehabilitation and physical therapy. A short list of those types of animals include older or arthritic dogs, overweight dogs, dogs recovering from orthopedic and other major surgeries including cruciate ligament injuries (both pre- and post- operatively), degenerative myelopathy, canine athletes including agility, service and police dogs and dogs who could use additional exercise during the colder months of the year.
The general goals for rehabilition and physical therapy include regaining or maintaining strength, mobility and balance; the goals for surgical patients are to speed recovery time. We also develop specific goals for each animal, and tailor those goals to also achieve the owner's objectives as well. Here
is a video of the treadmill in action.
